How to import MusicXML into MuseScore.
Sent a .musicxml, .xml, or .mxl file, or converted a scan into one? Here's what happens when it lands in MuseScore.
The import, step by step
- Get the MusicXML file onto your machine. MuseScore reads .musicxml, .xml, and .mxl. Keep the extension intact.
- Open MuseScore and choose File › Open. Select the file — the same way you'd open a MuseScore score. No separate import dialog.
- Let MuseScore build the score. MuseScore parses parts and measures, then lays the score out with its own engraving rules.
- Check the first system of every part. Clef, key, time signature, and instrument name tell you within seconds if a part came across correctly.
- Save as a MuseScore score. Save in MuseScore's format and keep the original MusicXML as your source.
What comes across reliably
Notes, rests, key and time signatures, clefs, voices, ties, slurs, dynamics, articulations, tempo, repeats, and lyrics transfer well. Part names and staff grouping usually survive too.
Page layout does not: MuseScore recomputes spacing, breaks, and page turns with its own engraving engine, so the page count can change. That is expected, not a failed import.
What usually needs cleanup
- Beaming. Re-derived from the time signature; may need re-grouping by hand.
- Tuplet brackets and numbers. Notes are usually right; bracket and number placement often are not.
- Layout. Spacing and breaks are recomputed — re-apply breaks only where needed.
- Text styles. Titles and rehearsal marks may land in the wrong style slot.
- Anything unusual. Check custom noteheads, percussion mapping, and figured bass first.
Troubleshooting
The file will not open. Confirm the extension is .musicxml, .xml, or .mxl; if a .mxl was unzipped in transit, open the .musicxml inside instead.
The parts are garbled. Wrong staff order or a split part usually means the file's part assignments are wrong, not the import — fix them at the source.
Bars hold the wrong number of beats. That is a content problem in the file and will look the same in every program that opens it.
Nothing appears at all. Usually an empty or truncated file — check its size first.
